Lonnie L. Rowell, Ph.D., Center Director

Lonnie Rowell is the Founding Director of CS3. He joined the faculty of the USD Counseling Program in 1995, having previously been a faculty member at San Diego State University and at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.  Dr. Rowell coordinates the School Counseling Specialization and serves as Director of USD’s Counseling Program. His scholarly work focuses on a variety of issues in school counseling, in particular the use of action research to strengthen practice. He has held numerous leadership positions in the field, including President of the California School Counselor Association (2000) and the California Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors (1998), Planning Committee Chair for the first California School Counseling Research Summit (2005), lead organizer and Director of Operations for the California Association of School Counselors’ Emergency Legislative Task Force (2006), and Chair of the California Association of School Counselors’ AB 1802 Implementation Task Force (2006).

Dr. Rowell has received numerous awards and recognition for his work in counselor education and counseling leadership and advocacy, including the 2008 Counseling Program Outstanding Faculty Award, the H.B. McDaniel Foundation’s Individual Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Counseling (2007), a 2006 University of San Diego Recognition-Based University Professorship, the 2004 Advocate of the Year Award from the California Association of School Counselors, a 2003 Special Recognition Award for Mentoring/Leadership from the Western Association of Counselor Educators & Supervisors (WACES), the 2000 Student Advocacy Award from the San Diego County Office of Education, and the 1998 Jim Saum Government Relations Award from the California Association for Counseling and Development (CACD).
