**Additional university safety information can be found in the Annual Campus Safety and Security Report**

The Department of Public Safety is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all USD students, faculty, staff and visitors. In keeping with this commitment and in light of current international issues, we want to remind all campus community members of the University's policy that each person is required to possess a valid USD identification card while on campus. Should the national threat level be increased to "severe" (red), Public Safety will implement a number of additional security precautions throughout the campus. One such measure may include verifying a legitimate affiliation with USD by our Public Safety Officers by requesting to see a USD I.D. card. All campus visitors will be identified through other identification measures and the nature of their visit confirmed accordingly. Another increased security measure may involve proof of USD affiliation prior to boarding our trams at all off-campus locations.

USD has a well-developed Emergency Management Program. All threats to our community can be divided into two categories, those that require immediate evacuation of buildings and those that require seeking shelter within the buildings. Evacuation of the buildings will be signaled by activation of the fire alarm evacuation systems. The assembly locations have been predetermined and were practiced during evacuation exercises each year.

In the event an emergency occurs which dictates safety be sought within University buildings, appropriate information will be announced over Department of Public Safety patrol vehicle public address systems and portable public address systems throughout the community. The announcement will be preceded by a siren alert tone. All students, faculty and staff will be instructed to remain within their classrooms, office areas, residences or other indoor locations. Additional updated instructions will be made available to all community members via mass e-mail, voice mail and the USD web site.

We ask for your support of these and other important security measures should they become necessary to implement in the future.
