International Education Week, 2008: Calendar of Events

The purpose of these events is to promote the advantages of global competency which is dependent on quality education at the international level in order to be a productive citizen in our increasingly global community.

Throughout the Week...

Display in the UC:
International Education Week Photo Contest, showcasing photos taken from all over the globe, will be displayed.

International Center Open House:
Visit the International Center to explore all international opportunities.

Project Concern International Donation Drive:
Help build healthy communities across the border with Project Concern International. There will be donation areas throughout campus to collect materials for needy families in Mexico. Needed supplies include school supplies, clothing, and bedding. Please bring contributions to the International Center in Serra 315.

Red Cross Blood Drive for International Causes:
The USD campus community has the opportunity to save lives around the globe by donating blood to the Red Cross. Donations will be delivered to UCSD Medical Center where it will be used for international transplants and transfusions.

 

Monday, November 17

12:00 pm- 1:30 pm ~ "True Life: I'm an International Traveler"
An in-depth look at the relationship between international travel, cultural awareness, social responsibility and sustainability with keynot speaker Dr. Tara Ceranic followed by an open forum for travelers to share their experiences. Lunch will be served. RSVP to dsteiner@sandiego.edu.  

4:00 pm- 6:00 pm ~ "How to effectively teach refugee and immigrant populations in schools"
This panel discussion with refugee and immigrant parents will address their children's educational needs in the U.S. educational system and share ideas and concerns with USD student teachers, faculty and staff. (SOLES Theatre)

 

Tuesday, November 18

7:30 am- 9:00 am ~ "Serving Your Country, Serving Your Global Community"  
Speakers from the Naval Hospital Ship USNS Mercy will address their recent 4-month humanitarian and civic deployment, the Pacific Partnership 2008, to the Southeast Asia and Oceanic regions. The Pacific Partnership 2008 served as a multinational collection of military personnel and non-governmental organizations that provided medical, surgical and engineering services in the Pacific. 12:00 pm-2:00 pm ~ International Opportunities Fair
Students can learn about various opportunities for international employment and volunteer work. Organizations attending the fair include AIESEC, American Red Cross, U.S. Department of State's Foreign Service, Fulbright Program, Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, Jesuit Volunteer Corps International, NetImpact, Peace Corps, "Going Global," Project Concern International, TeachAbroad.com, USD's Transborder Institute and more. 2:30 pm- 4:00 pm ~ "The Political Sociology of the American Military Establishment from Vietnam to Iraq"

5:30 pm- 7:00 pm ~ International Poetry Night
Students, faculty and staff are invited to read their original works or the works of others in any language. Light snacks and refreshments will be served. (French Parlour, Founders Hall)

7:00 pm- 8:30 pm ~"Transitional Justice: Recovering Historical Memory and Combating Impunity in the Post-Conflict Context"
Mario Domingo and Carlos Alarcón from the Archbishop’s Human Rights Office in Guatemala will address the challenges of teaching a new generation about past human rights violations so that “never again” becomes a reality. They will also address their work in prosecuting the perpetrators of human rights abuses and combating impunity in Guatemala. Mario Domingo was the investigating attorney in the case of the 1998 murder of Bishop Juan Jose Gerardi Conedera, which after 10 years resulted in convictions against the intellectual authors of the murder. Carlos Alarcon directs the Culture of Peace division of the Human Rights Office in Guatemala. A reception will follow. RSVP by Tuesday, Nov. 11. 12:00 pm- 2:00 pm ~ "Transitional Justice in Guatemala: Creating a Culture of Peace for the Sake of the Next Generation"
Carlos Alarcon directs the Culture of Peace division of the Archbishop’s Human Rights Office in Guatemala, which is tasked with carrying forward the message of the office’s landmark study, Guatemala: Never Again. The Culture of Peace division has produced popularized versions of the report and promotes peace education throughout Guatemala. No RSVP is necessary and attendees are welcome to bring a lunch. Light refreshments will be provided. (IPJ A&B)

This is a fundraising event for the USD Symphony trip to Ecuador. $10 general admission; $8 seniors, USD faculty, staff and alumni; $5 students with ID. This event will also take place on Sunday, November 23rd at 2pm in Shiley Theatre.
