Welcome from Julie Sullivan, Vice President and Provost
Welcome to the web pages of the vice president and provost at the University of San Diego. The provost is the university's chief academic officer, providing academic leadership to its college and schools and promoting excellence in all of the university's academic programs and initiatives.
The university provides an intellectually challenging, values-based education to all students in its college and schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, the School of Law, the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science and the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. In addition to its highly selective undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences and business, the university offers outstanding doctoral programs in nursing and leadership studies; a breadth of prestigious master’s programs in areas such as fine arts, education, government and non-profit leadership, peace and justice, business, real estate and nursing; and highly ranked Juris Doctor and graduate law programs. Finally, the University of San Diego is one of the faith-based universities with the largest number of prestigious honor societies. For example, there are active chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, and Kappa Gamma Pi on campus.
Our outstanding academic reputation is driven by the quality of our faculty and our students. The methods by which we excel in our teaching and research reflect the rigorous intellectual inquiry demanded by the Catholic intellectual tradition. This tradition also supports the privileged place the University of San Diego gives to the liberal arts and sciences in the undergraduate curriculum and to the strong influence of the liberal arts and sciences on our graduate programs. Students are challenged to develop knowledge, values and skills to enrich their lives and serve the global, civic, and faith communities. The university provides many resources to assist them, including programs associated with the Office of Student Learning Initiatives and the tutoring centers.
The university has a friendly campus atmosphere, opportunity for close rapport between faculty and students and class sizes that facilitate personal attention and instructor accessibility. With its location on the Pacific Rim, the university is well positioned to provide its students with a broadened sense of "community" through multicultural experiences on campus, within the San Diego community, and through its international studies programs. Students may engage in Community Service Learning and the Trans-Border Institute as outreach to the local community. They may explore social issues through the United Front Multicultural Center, the Women’s Center, and a variety of student activities and organizations sponsored by Associated Students. The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice offers an international forum for the campus community, and study abroad and other campus-wide international programs provide students with the opportunity to experience other cultures and their languages in ways that are fully supportive of and connected to the academic endeavor.
Students who attend the University of San Diego will find they are supported and expected to become actively engaged citizens. Graduates from the university leave with a sense of the complexity of issues the world presents, and the courage and conviction to express their beliefs and opinions as they face those issues.
